Anybody any idea what this signal is?? It sounds like a metalic robot kinda noise.
I cant say i've ever heard it before, and the freq doesn't seem familiar either?

It seems to span from 5.225MHz to 5.230MHz, peaking at .228/.229. I've no idea what it is at all.

Crusty, if you're about, do you have any idea?

Hi Brownie,

Quite unusual that frequency, comes and goes.

By the way hows the Wellbrook loop performing, hope to be getting one within the next month?

Cheeers

Hi Mark,

It's good to be honest. I live in a very very noisy area, so it doesn't totally eliminate noise, which is kinda annoying, but at night the noise level from 3MHz onwards is about S0-S1. Below 3MHz. i'm getting S2-S4 of noise, still, i get Coastguard on 2.182MHz great, and i hear quite a bit of activity on 160m too.
I get airband well too, Gander, Santa Maria, Shanwick all comes through perfectly, and on good nights i can even get San Francisco Pacific ATC and North Africa/India too, which is very good in my opinion. I'm not big on AM broadcasts, but i get China Radio at S9+, BBC World Service comes in great too.
I've got mine on a rotator, which does actually help quite a bit on the lower freqs, and it does help null the noise out a lot too.

I was getting that signal on 5.229MHz at about S7-S8 ish, not heard it since actually.

Paul

If you cant get those the loop is working very well indeed and your noise levels are very acceptable, generally signals will be down on the loop antenna but likewise the noise will be greatly reduced. Keep us informed on the loop

It's not often that i hear them, but i have on a couple of occasions. Bare in mind that the signal was weak, probably S1-S2, but it was VERY understandable.
I've heard Tripoli ATC quite often on the loop. I must say though, during the day it's pretty bad, but then again everyone has TV's etc on, and myself owning a Plasma TV isn't the best thing for HF listening! As soon as night comes though, the signals just roll in. I'll make a list of everything i hear transmissions on and note them down, if someone can possibly help me with locations for them?

I meant say was If you can get those on the loop then its working very well irrespective of signal strength is audibility that counts in Ham radio a 5/2 report is better than a 3/8 !

Ooh i get you now! I'm actually rather suprised at how good this little loop is, i'm sure there's better antennas out there, but for limited space, you can't beat these loops!
I used to have a longwire up, but that was constantly plagued with noise, then again, i didn't have a tuner with it, but if i ever got a tuner, i'd definitely give a longwire another go.

Sadly tuners don't help with noise levels. If you put up another randomwire I suspect you won't use it much, with the possible exception of frequencies where it's resonant. Wellbrooks are a good all-rounder. 8)

Hi Dean, Paul Crusty

Glad to hear the loops performing Paul, impressive catches there for the ATC.

Ive got an ideal place away from the house to put the loop, should be ordering it soon along with a rotator. Using a longwire and 9:1 balun at the moment with fairly good results. Using an Icom R75 so hopefully should be a good combo.

Cheers folks
